Some South Carolina cities are defunding their police departments … due to COVID-19-prompted revenue drops. Some police budgets in South Carolina are getting cut, but due to revenue shortfalls. The cuts include Mount Pleasant’s delayed plans for a new $1.5 million public safety training center. Source: P&C

Amid pandemic, 90% of large-scale events approved in S.C. With restrictions put on large gatherings of more than 250 people, the state Commerce Department has approved 90% of more than 800 events that asked for permission. A quarter of the events were expected to draw more than one thousand people. The events have to include social distancing measures, but the Commerce Department reportedly doesn’t check up on it and leaves that to law enforcement. Source: AP

DOJ backs McMaster’s petition to rehear voucher case. Gov. Henry McMaster is petitioning the South Carolina Supreme Court to rehear his case that coronavirus aid should go to private school vouchers. The U.S. Department of Justice has asked to join the case and is supporting his push to have the first ruling overturned. Source: WCSC
