COVID-19 updates: South Carolina health officials reported 1,243 new cases of the coronavirus on Wednesday, with 4 additional confirmed deaths.
With 8,991 tests reported Wednesday, 13.8% were positive.

Confirmed cases in S.C.: 197,652 (+1,243)
Positive tests in Charleston County (total): 18,512 (+96)
Negative tests in S.C.: 2,303,438
Deaths in S.C. from COVID-19: 4,015 (+4)

Charleston City Councilman Harry Griffin said he would lead an effort to make West Ashley its own town if a proposed tax hike is approved next year. The proposed tax increase would withhold a portion of residents’ property tax relief with the goal of helping Charleston recover from an $18 million budget shortfall. The city is planning to keep half of the local option sales tax money in order to prevent job cuts.
