Whether you’re into hoppy IPAs, roasty porters, malty stouts, or light pilsners Charleston Beer Week has something for all beer lovers. This is one of the only weeks in Charleston when it’s OK to be a professional alcoholic, so get out there and take advantage of these events. Participating brewers include local Holy City, Westbrook, COAST, Palmetto, along with notables like Brooklyn Brewery, Sweet Water, and Thomas Creek.
The beer week schedule is packed with sudsy fun. It started yesterday at The Alley with eight breweries taking each other in an epic bowling showdown. Check out our event listings for a look at all the Beer Week happenings.
Tonight, there’s a Stone/Allagash/Anderson Valley Beer Dinner hosted by Five Loaves on Cannon Street. This craft beer dinner includes four courses as well as an introduction beer and intermission treat. For $70 per person you can sip an Allagash Fluxus and nom-nom on some lobster carpaccio served with micro-greens and a lemon-and-pink peppercorn clarified butter. A lightly smoked duck breast with curried coconut farro and honeydew vinaigrette will be paired with the Allagash Curieux. During intermission, give your palate a break with a tomato and basil sorbet and a taste of Stone Sublimely Self Righteous. Course three will have you unbuttoning your pants with braised oxtails over an oyster mushroom, white bean, and spinach risotto served with a cauliflower and leek puree with a flight of three beers: Stone Smoked Porter, Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale, and Stone Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale. Finish the night off with an apple pie stuffed apple served with a triple berry macerated brandy coulis and paired with the Anderson Valley Winter Solstice. Take that digestive system!
It wouldn’t be CHS Beer Week without an event at Closed for Business. The King Street bar known for its craft beers has 42 taps, and on Tuesday all CFB taps will be featuring ten S.C. breweries: COAST, Conquest, Frothy Beard, Holy City, New South, Palmetto, River Dog, RJ Rockers, Thomas Creek and Westbrook. Representatives from the breweries will be on hand to say thanks, and you’ll get to toast to Charleston’s blossoming beer scene and stagger away.
By the halfway point, your liver will begin to ache, but remember the only way to detox is to retox, so plan to suck it up and drink on. Boone’s Bar is hosting Craft Beer Trivia with River Dog on Wednesday night. River Dog brews are taking over the taps with Coastal Wit, Double IPA, English Dry Cider, Galaxy Quest Pale Ale, Red Ale, and a special release of El Dorado Single Hop Pale Ale. The beers will be tapped at 7:30 p.m. and trivia begins at 8 p.m. There will be plenty of swag giveaways, and wings are half off all night. With $4.50 pints of River Dog brews this is an event where you can ball on a budget.
Highland Beer of Asheville and locavore restaurant the Green Door will pair up for what should be a fantastic night. The menu will include local clams in a coconut curry broth, braised pig head with candied bacon, pickled turnips and grilled sourdough, Highland-braised local beef tongue sliders, house mustard, pickled green tomatoes and arugula. Better call and reserve your spot today before this event fills up.
Also on Thursday Mellow Mushroom downtown is hosting There’s Art in that Can with Oskar Blues. At this event you get to drink a variety of brews from Brevard, N.C., and then watch the empty cans be turned into art by local aspiring artists. This exclusive art demonstration will feature Dale’s Pale Ale, Mama’s Little Yella Pils, Old Chub, Gubna and G’Knight Imperial Red. Here won’t feel bad about consuming so many cans, because they will be recycled right before your eyes.
TGIFirkin Friday on the patio at Smoky Oak is a great way to start your weekend. Firkin, or a cask of beer, is a traditional serving container used to naturally carbonate beer, resulting in a softer mouth feel and more flavor. This rare beer event will give you an opportunity to try some beers you may know well in a whole new way. Participating brewers include: Sierra Nevada, River Dog, RJ Rockers, Sweetwater, Holy City, and Thomas Creek. Time to get your firkin’ on because it is finally Friday!
So the bad news, Saturday means CBW is coming to an end, but the good news, it also means its time for the Seasonal Beer Crawl. For $35 you can stumble around downtown and try seasonal and flagship craft brews at some of your favorite bars. Each bar will host a brewery and feature some of their beers at a special price just for CBW. Locations and beer include: Mellow Mushroom serving Foothills India Brown Ale, Hoppyum, SweetWater Road Trip, and 420, Mac’s Place pouring Highland Gaelic Ale and Devil’s Britches IPA, and Moe’s Downtown: RJ Rockers Son of a Peach, Bell Ringer Ale, Magic Hat #9, and Encore.
