Young and old team up for gallery's impressive debut

Eye See You

The Halsey's eye-centric guerrilla marketing seemed to pay off, as Friday night's gallery opening featuring Hilton Head-based artist Aldwyth packed in everybody and their mother. The wine ran out too soon, but the crowds stayed, wandering the clean, bright new space and huddling close to get a look at Aldwyth's complex creations. Local artists, students, and scenesters rubbed elbows, taking in the life's work of the 70-something collage and assemblage artist who uses found objects in her often epic-sized pieces."The World According to Zell" impressively uses every illustration from the 1871's Zell's Popular Encyclopedia. "22 Eyeballs, One Asshole" cheekily reveals the artist's sense of humor. And probably my favorite, the cigar box encyclopedia, features 26 boxes filled with items representing each letter — A is for A-bomb, L is for Leg, R is for Rat (one of several pieces using a real animal's carcass to teach the lesson). The musty, antique-feeling pieces almost felt dirty at times (see, animal carcasses), particularly within the Halsey's brand new space — but it was a satisfying juxtaposition at the same time. The exhibit definitely deserves a second look, but make sure you allot plenty of time — it could take hours to properly explore Aldwyth's work.
