Re: “Generation Vexed

If members of this generation expect praise and easy rewards, we have to look at MY generation (who raised them) to figure out how that happened. When we handed them a soccer trophy just for showing up, an "A" in Biology for bringing in DNA-shaped cookies mom made, and a weekly allowance whether they mowed & cleaned or not, what did we expect? Self-motivated, self-supporting, self-sacrificing? That was my parents' generation. My Dad used to say, when I brought home straight A's in liberal arts fields, "Congratulations! That plus a fifty cents will buy you a cup of coffee!" (Coffee was cheaper back then...).

We've gone from "an honest wage for an honest day's work" to "the world owes you not just a living, but kudos just for being you" in two generations. Fortunately, the current economic realities are probably a more effective cure for this than we could have dreamed up--so long as our laws and policies don't continue the enabling we started. Bravo to the young people in the article who are doing what they have to do to pay their own bills. If waiting tables or folding jeans at the Gap is what you can get, work hard and be grateful, as you continue looking for better opportunities. That WILL buy you a cup of coffee.
