Re: “THEATRE PREVIEW: Gershwin at Folly

You should fire this reviewer. I saw the first 20 minutes of this monstrous petroleum product of a performance and then had to go to the bar and try to erase it from me memory. This flaccid storyline combined with the soulless renditions of otherwise wonderful songs do a horrifying disservice to Gershwin's work and are an insult to the craft of stage. Not to mention the absurdly racist and clich├ęd portrayals of southern blacks. I am glad Gershwin is dead so that he does not have to suffer this blight on his legacy. The only insight that the play tried to offer was some absurd idea about Gershwin's creativity. Ah, this musical genius got his ideas from the sound of the ocean. How wonderful and quaint. Blech. If that's right then the whole company should go on down to the beach and hold their heads under the water until they absorb some modicum of inspiration. Amazingly cheap and shallow! A joke!
