Re: “Stavrinakis lost the election as much as Tecklenburg won it

Yes, Leon was too thin-skinned -- perhaps too much so to be in politics. A few years ago I called him up and asked him for a comment for something I was writing and he said he didn't want to talk to me. I asked why and he said he didn't like something I had written about him in the past. Hell, I don't even know what it was that I wrote that so upset him, but that is not a very helpful attitude to take if you are in politics.

Re: “It will take more than goodwill to heal this state

I have 800 words to make my point and my space was used up. Yes, we need more investment in education -- a lot more. We need a progressive tax structure -- rather than the most regressive in the nation -- to pay for that education. But we also need a pay raise in this state, something that would give people a little hope, that would allow them a little breathing space, that would ease the stress and tension of just paying the rent and buying the groceries. People who are living from hand to mouth are angry, intolerant, easily frightened, easily manipulated. Of course, a lot of people like it that way, but it does not make for good governance or a good society.

I don't know if Factory Connection was trying to be a wise guy or a dumb ass, but the site for the very secular Lowcountry Food Bank is http://lowcountryfoodbank.org/hope

Re: “Haley plays the race card in Myrtle Beach

I completely agree with Streetlaw. Motorcycles should be just as quiet as automobiles. I have been writing it and saying it for years.

As to Coby Dubose, I took one paragraph in an 800-word column from the Daily Kos post, which was all based on public information. No, I did not credit the Daily Kos in my column, as DK did not credit their source. What's the big deal, Coby?

Here is my much-maligned paragraph:

Violence does not seem to bother Gov. Haley when tens of thousands of mostly white people gather at Clemson and the University of South Carolina for hours of drinking, fighting, littering, and debauchery before football games each autumn. In recent years, there have been a killing, numerous fights, a sexual assault against a child among other unpleasantness at these massive tailgating parties, but no politician — not even Nikki Haley — would be foolish enough to try to shut down that tradition.
