BTW if you are in columbia, sc on tues., 9/27/11, USC's McKissick Museum will be screening "Daughters of the Dust" that evening, along with having discussions with the director.

Movies at McKissick: Screening the South
Tuesdays, September 13 thru November 1, 2011 – 7 PM

McKissick Museum is offering a Southern culture film series in conjunction with the fall exhibition, Showing Your Mettle. The series is free and open to the public. Each film will have a guest scholar on hand to facilitate discussion about the film.

Series schedule:

September 27, 7 PM. Daughters of the Dust, written, directed and produced by Julie Dash in 1991, tells the story of three generations of Gullah women at the turn of the 20th century and focuses on the family's migration from the Sea Islands to the American mainland. Filmmaker Julie Dash and Dr. Folashade Alao will host the discussion on the film.
