Weekend Round-Up: Blues, monsters, and haints

The best events in Charleston Feb. 5-7

This weekend might be kicking off in a wet way, but don’t let that get you down — put on those rain boots and power through, knowing that the weather will get better on Saturday and Sunday.

Head downtown Friday from 5-8 p.m. for Blues on Broad, an art walk with a bluesy twist, in honor of the Lowcountry Blues Bash. Some shows opening include Lines of Communication, works by Christopher Murphy at Scoop; Forrest at the Beach, works by John Hull at Corrigan; and Black vs. White, a group show at Robert Lange. Also on Friday night, Rick Rhodes Photography Studio in West Ashley opens a dual show with Robin McCoy and David Ackerman. On Saturday, head to 16 Penny Gallery, inside 52.5 Records, for a show of works from Sht! and Badjon.

As mentioned, the Lowcountry Blues Bash kicks off Friday and continues through Feb. 16. There are events all over town, so check the full schedule. Some other noteworthy music this weekend includes Yonder Mountain String Band at the Music Farm Friday, Toubab Krewe at the Pour House on Saturday, and the Help Haiti Benefit at the Windjammer on Saturday, featuring music from Dangermuffin, Slanguage, White Rhino, and many more. On a larger scale, Beatlemania Now! is at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center. On Sunday, the Pine Hill Haints with Megan Jean & The KFB are at the Tin Roof.

A couple of promising fundraisers include the Chocolate Affair Gala on Saturday at the Holliday Alumni Center, and the “Swinging Good Time” dinner and dance at Blackbaud the same night, a fundraiser for the Charleston County School of the Arts.

Also at Blackbaud, the United Soccer League Men’s Player Showcase continues through Saturday. Monster trucks are at the North Charleston Coliseum Friday and Saturday. In other sports news, there’s some big football game Sunday, and a lot of places are hosting parties. There’s a brunch at Trattoria Lucca and a free viewing party at Cinebarre.

Lastly, Theatre /verv/ presents a production of The Vagina Monologues at South of Broadway Theatre Company Studios through Saturday.
