Seven years ago, Papa Roach put their name on the charts with the song "Last Resort," conveying the angst-ridden sentiments of countless teenagers through lyrics like, "Cut my life into pieces/I've reached my last resort/suffocation/no breathing/Don't give a fuck if I cut my arms bleeding."

Their 2000 album, Infest, made it to # 5 on the Billboard charts, and the high-school buddies — singer Jacoby Shaddix, guitarist Jerry Horton, bassist Tobin Esperance, and drummer Dave Buckner — from Vacaville, Calif., have continued to find commercial success writing songs that glorify depression and suicide.

This week the Roach play the Plex in support of their new album, The Paramour Sessions, likely to a packed house of teenagers struggling with the wretchedness of existence. The album was recorded at the Paramour Mansion on the California coast — a place "completely fucking haunted," according to drummer Buckner.

"I was visited by interdimensional beings, had out-of-body sex with spirits from old Hollywood, and now know what it feels like to have a ghost walk through me," he says.

The songs that emerged from four months in a haunted house continue their tradition of hopeless suffering. Current hit single "Forever," with driving guitars that sound vaguely like a poor man's The Offspring, cries, "Take these memories that are haunting me/of a paper man cut into shreds by his own pair of scissors." Sing along!

Papa Roach have found their niche, and it appears this papa is prolific enough to keep reproducing. It's the nature of the roach. You thought you squashed it, you flushed it down the toilet, but somehow it still manages to crawl back out. —Stratton Lawrence

Papa Roach share the stage with local band Number One Contender at the Plex on Wed. May 2. Doors are at 7 p.m. Tickets are $21. See www.paparoach.com and www.theplexonline.com for more.
