In the years since their early club days in the late '90s, Boulder-based "Rocky-grass" quintet String Cheese Incident have released a half-dozen album albums on their own SCI Fidelity label and toured the world – from the Red Rocks Amphitheater and the Warfield in San Francisco to Asia, Europe, and Alaska. This week, they headline an outdoor, all-ages event on Daniel Island with Tony Rice, Peter Rowan, and local reggae/dub ensemble Dub Island Sound System.

"We had a little time off since August and had a great break, so we're definitely looking forward to heading back to the Southeast and hit some places we haven't been in a long time," says bassist Keith Moseley, speaking from the Denver airport last week. "It's been a while since we've played Charleston, so this will be great fun ... especially with Tony Rice and Peter Rowan on stage."

The lineup includes Michael Kang (guitar, mandolin, violin), Bill Nershi (guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (keyboards), and Michael Travis (drums). They recently completed a summer tour behind a new collection called One Step Closer. Stepping away from their rootsy, folk-inflicted jam/rock sound, the collection veers into more sophisticated rock songwriting territory – a bit more straightforward in structure and modern in approach.

"We keep changing the set lists so much from tour to tour," says Moseley. "But at the Charleston show, there will be some material featured from the last few albums. We try to reinvent ourselves each time, so you never know what you're going to get. We start working on a set list around sound check time, then again backstage. Every night, we try to work in tunes and transitions that we haven't done in a long time. That keeps things fresh." –T. Ballard Lesemann

String Cheese Incident headline with support from Peter Rowan & The Tony Rice Quartet and Dub Island Sound System at Blackbaud Stadium (1990 Daniel Island Dr.) on Sun. Oct. 8. Tickets are $31.50. Doors open at 2 p.m. See www.stringcheeseincident.com for more info.
