David Szlam and Jake Johnson have infused bourbon with the classic flavor of ginger to create Virgil Kaine, a newly launched fusion liquor. The pair adds fresh ginger from Johns Island and vanilla to a base of two-year-old Kentucky bourbon. They run the combination through a re-distilling process and bottle it up in North Charleston. According to Szlam, Virgil Kaine is best enjoyed with a splash of carbonated soda and a twist of lime. He and Johnson are hoping to expand their operations into North Carolina and Georgia, and they are also trying to plan a music festival this spring at the Brickhouse Kitchen on James Island. —Ryan Overhiser
