Unsilent Night

When: Sat., Dec. 18, 5 p.m. 2010
Price: Free
Some people shouldn’t go caroling. Like many of the contestants on American Idol, for example. Or me — I have a terrible voice. Instead, we can participate in Unsilent Night, a wandering boom box caroling sound installation. Founded by composer Phil Kline in 2001, the event is hosted locally by the New Music Collective, and it’s been done in cities all across the world. Participants will roam the streets of downtown Charleston with media-playing devices — like an iPod deck or an old-school stereo — with all the different sounds creating an auditory sculpture. The march will start at the City Gallery at Waterfront Park at 5:15 p.m., where everyone will press play all at once, spreading the sound all the way to Marion Square. NMC will provide the tapes, CDs, or digital downloads. If you’re interested in participating, you should RSVP to —Susan Cohen
