Matthew Schafer, better known to his fans as Uncle Kracker, has come a long way since serving as Kid Rock’s DJ for much of the 1990s. After the success of Rock’s Devil Without a Cause, Kracker decided to strike out on his own. His debut album Double Wide was released in 2000 and spawned the pop single “Follow Me.” A few more albums and hits later (including a cover of Dobie Gray’s 1973 hit “Drift Away”), Kracker was officially out from under Kid Rock’s shadow with a genuine fan base of his own. He makes a stop in the Lowcountry this week at the Windjammer, touring in support of his latest EP, Happy Hours: The South River Road Sessions. His radio-friendly songs, coupled with the laid-back atmosphere at the Jammer, all but ensure a good time for those venturing out for a fun gig on a work night. Opening the show is Connor Christian and Southern Gothic. Delivering a sound that is influenced by acts such as Ryan Adams, the Band, and the Counting Crows, Christian and his band seem sure to please any fan of alt-rock and Americana.
