True story: During the height of the 2004 elections, there was a political forum held in San Francisco. As speaker after speaker bemoaned the political state of the rest of the country (e.g. Kansas, etc.), someone finally interrupted. "Raise your hand," they said, "if you were born in San Francisco." Less than a third of those present raised their hands. "That's exactly it," they continued. "Most of the folks here have come from somewhere else, often the very same conservative parts of the country we are complaining about."

I'm not arguing that everyone should go back to their hometown in West Kansas or Rural Arkansas or wherever, because that's a hard road to hoe for most anyone. But I am glad that more and more folks are willing to set down roots in their own little corners of the world, and till the soil and struggle and sweat and love and make something a little better and leave things a little better.
