Can the accordion be jazzy? Certainly. Virtuosic musician Toninho Ferragutti, a native of the state of São Paulo, is revered in Brazil as an expressive accordionist, clever composer, and diligent arranger. With support from a Brazilian string quartet, he can make his squeeze box sing with amazing fluency.

Make a joyful noise. One of the more exotic events of this year's Wells Fargo Jazz Series, Ferragutti's set should be cheerful and fun. The melodic compositions and fluid improvisations are based in the folk and traditional music of Brazil and South America. Supported by violin, viola, cello, and contrabass, he delivers an impressively passionate performance on his latest recording, a moody collection of peppery, jazzed-up choro and forro tunes titled Nem Sol Nem Lua.

Ferragutti finds a balance. In the strong combo setting, Ferragutti pushes musical boundaries and finds balance between texture, structure, and interplay. He respects the tradition of his instrument while adding Brazilian rhythms and unusual tunes into the mix.
