To be true patriots, we must look at where our country has fallen short

My America

America is not the place that we think it is. It's not the place we imagine it to be. America is at once a shining city on the hill and a superpower bully, a mean girl, a hypocritical father who says do as I say not as I do.

When it comes right down to it, America is a land of contradictions. It's a place where all men are free and yet we incarcerate more people than any other nation. It's a place where one of our most cherished rights — the right to vote — is practiced by so few. It is a place that topples despotic regimes to bring freedom to their people, but it allowed millions of its own to remain shackled for the majority of its history.

All of this is why it's important that on the Fourth of July we honor the Founding Fathers — and all the people who fought to keep America free — by remembering our shortcomings. If we are to truly be patriotic, we must remember where our beloved country has fallen short of our ideals. We must look at the nation that we truly are.

We are a nation that continues to wage a war on drugs even though the war has long since been lost and few support it.

We are a nation whose legislators don't even bother to read the bills they vote on.

We are a nation where the most important issues are debated inside a nearly empty hall.

We are a nation whose top elected officials spend most of their time at phone banks begging for cash from their donors.

We are a nation whose president feels it's more of a priority to campaign than to conduct the business of the people.

We are a nation where "hope" and "change" are nothing more than hollow campaign slogans.

We are a nation where lobbyists buy votes and corporate lawyers draft our laws.

We are a nation whose laws are drafted with loopholes to protect the laws' biggest offenders.

We are a nation where one-time radio shock jocks have displaced intellectual giants as the ideological leaders of the Republican Party.

We are a nation where the members of the progressive Democratic Party didn't have the balls to support gay marriage until the masses demanded it.

We are a nation where leaders refuse to lead, followers too easily follow, and charlatans are in control.

We are a nation where reaching across the aisle is an unforgivable sin.

We are a nation where the majority of legislators live in fear of the gun rights lobby.

We are a nation where two wealthy brothers influence elections across the country.

We are a nation who allows private contractors not bound by our laws to carry out military actions.

We are a nation that believes it is under attack when the battlefield is thousands of miles away.

We are a nation that spies on our allies and gives money and arms to our enemies.

We are a nation that is collecting every email that you will ever send and every internet search that you will ever make.

We are a nation that brands whistle-blowers traitors and treats journalists who expose the government's crimes as criminals.

We are a nation where corporations are people and poor people are parasites.

We are a nation where both parties support perpetual war.

We are a nation that grieves the loss of innocent lives at home but refuses to shed a tear for the thousands of innocents who have lost their lives at our hands.

We are a nation where the middle class is disappearing and the working class is belittled by an entire party.

We are a nation whose leaders pass unfunded mandates and wage unfunded wars.

We are a nation that is broke.

We are a nation that professes family values and then elects adulterous men to higher office.

We are a nation where a woman has to lead a filibuster to protect women's rights from callous men.

We are a nation whose leaders proclaim to believe in God but then routinely commit ungodly acts.

We are a nation where calling a racist a racist is the highest form of racism.

We are a nation where the party of personal responsibility refuses to take responsibility for its actions.

We are a nation where the party of the people is so afraid of appearing weak they kowtow to the demands of the military-industrial and prison-industrial complexes.

We are a nation of victims.

We are a nation of criminals.

We are a nation of cowards.

We are a nation where governments handouts are good for some people, but not for others.

We are a nation where corporations receive the best handouts of them all.

We are a nation where high-minded ideals about leveling the playing field have been leveled.

We are a nation where people vote for the party not the man.

We are a nation where voters will vote for a candidate if that candidate is related to a former politician.

We are a nation that refuses to believe that every person deserves the same quality of health care.

We are a nation that believes in free speech but only if it doesn't offend us.

We are a nation where districts are so gerrymandered that the outcomes are inevitable.

We are a nation that believes all men are created equal but some are more equal than others.

We are a nation that has a long way to go to live up to its ideals.

We are a nation that may be flawed, but we are still the most open and free society on the planet.

We are a nation that I'm happy to call my home.
