Timmy Curran Band

When: Wed., May 19 2010
Price: $10, $8 (adv.)
Not long ago, SoCal native Timmy Curran was battling waves and doing aerial flips as one of the top surfers on the World Championship Tour. These days, he’s singing and strumming a guitar from stage to stage. He’s still a surfer at heart, though, as demonstrated in the newly released surf/road trip documentary The Union Express. The film follows Curran as he rides up and down the California coast by train to explore surf spots with old buddies. After traveling to Japan and recording his first sets of original tunes, Curran’s first major break was with the song “Blue Eyes” from his 2008 debut Word of Mouth (Adeline Records). That album’s success led to opening slots on the road with The Foo Fighters, Incubus, Switchfoot, and Angels and Airwaves. His latest release Verses — released this spring on his own label, Citsuca Music — veers away from an acoustic, surfer-groove rock style and into heavier alt-rock modes. “Variety was important to me on this album,” Curran says of Verses. “My music is evolving, and I want the listeners to come on that journey with me. I was inspired by all different types of music, and I hope it will show on this album.” The Windjammer screens The Union Express at 6:30 p.m., Curran and his band perform afterward. —T.
