THRIVE ‌ Fitness

Most women gain a healthy 25-35 pounds while pregnant, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists — great for a budding embryo, not so fun for a post-pregnancy mom looking to lose the baby baggage. Luckily, there’s Stroller Strides of Charleston, a national fitness program that recently came to Daniel Island. Owner Amy Parr and her team of instructors hold classes every morning on the island, at Park West, and in I’On. “We meet, warm up, discuss issues, then start with power walking. We do a lot with resistance bands and work every major muscle group,” says Parr. All stretching and strengthening takes place with babes in tow as the moms push the tiny tots around in their strollers. Parr says the kids stay entertained as well. “While we’re doing bicep work we’re singing the ABCs, or we’ll do popping squats and sing ‘Pop Goes the Weasel,’” says Parr. To sign up for classes, call 442-7438 or go to www.strollerstrides.net/charleston .

OLYMPIC INSPIRATION
Meet Staciana Winfield: professor, swim coach, and, oh yes, Olympic Gold Medalist. Now a faculty member at the College of Charleston, Winfield is a championship record holder (100M breaststroke) as well as an Olympic Gold medalist in the 400-meter medley relay. The athlete most recently swept the 50M, 100M, and 200M breaststroke at Brazil’s World Cup in February and is training for her next big meet, U.S. Nationals, in August. Winfield says it’s essential to partner up with someone who will help challenge you to work for your fitness goals, and most importantly, love what you’re doing! According to Winfield, exercise isn’t so hard if you’re having fun.

Motivation is the key ingredient to an excellent workout, but you can’t always do it alone. That’s why Jeff Johnson opened Charleston’s Wellspring Fitness three years ago on East Bay Street, located right next to Wet Willie’s. Wellspring works one-on-one with clients to develop a workout regime, discuss nutrition, and use massage therapy. Wellspring’s found its greatest success in the Get Real Program, a six-week plan focusing on nutrition and exercise in a group setting. Generally, sessions cost $25, and contracts are done on a monthly basis. “We have five trainers on staff, and three people train at a time,” says employee George Moultrie. If you’re looking for an alternative to another solo Saturday at the gym, contact Wellspring at 727-9900 or visit
