Re: “Folly Beach Residents Report Police Harassment

There are good & bad politicians out there, and the same can be said of law enforcement officers. Wonder how many times GW Bush or B Clinton have been drunk in public or used a drug in a recreational manner yet did not go to jail, instead they became the President. I am sure this officer takes his job serious and wants to do a good job, but sometimes we all can go overboard, or have bad days, or treat someone differently just becuase of the way they look, talk, dress, etc. I am sure no person out there can say they have never broken any laws because I can guarantee you've driven at least 1 MPH over the speed limit, rolled a stop sign, failed to signal, etc. on more than one occassion but you didn't get a ticket or go to jail for it. * Would you rather have law resources tied up convicting people of victimless crimes, or tied up stopping a terrorist attack? * Would you rather have law resources tied up convicting people of walking home from a bar after a few drinks, or tied up stopping a child from being molested, or your grandmother from being robbed? * Would you rather have law resources tied up convicting people of victimless crimes like prohibition laws which allow violent criminals back on the street, or keeping violent criminals (rapists, murderers, armed robbers) in jail w/o early release? The Issue: Violent crime and fraud threaten the lives, happiness and belongings of Americans. Government's ability to protect the rights and property of individuals from crimes of violence and fraud is compromised because resources are focused on vice rather than on real crimes. Laws that codify "victimless crimes" turn those who simply conduct voluntary transactions and exercise free choice into criminals. This results in the United States having one of the highest percentages of the population in prison of any country in the world; yet real crime remains prevalent in many parts of the country. Government exists to protect the rights of every individual including life, liberty and property. Criminal laws should be limited to violation of the rights of others through force or fraud, or deliberate actions that place others involuntarily at significant risk of harm. Individuals retain the right to voluntarily assume risk of harm to themselves in the exercise of free choice. *** Prohibition will work great injury to the cause of temperance. It is a species of intemperance within itself, for it goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation, and makes a crime out of things that are not crimes. A Prohibition law strikes a blow at the very principles upon which our government was founded. Abraham Lincoln: Speech in the Illinois House of Representatives, Dec 18, 1840.
