Re: “Progressives make fun of the 10th amendment at their own peril

"States rights" is nothing more than a battle cry from the GOP that is used as leverage to influence federal policies when their find their political power faltering. States rights was a 18th century concept that was a compromise for the colonies whose governors wanted more autonomy and political power. It was more appropriate during the horse and buggy period of America when geography separated our citizens by days and weeks on horseback from one town/city to the next. In the modern world where news travels in an instant from coast to coast, and the national leaders can speak in Washington and be broadcast into every home in America, "states rights" is a dead issue. We are a nation as a whole, and no longer a loosely associated band of territories and colonies. The republicans are crying out "states rights" only because their political power is based in some of the more ignorant regions of our country, and not because the concept has any pertinence in a modern world.
