Re: “Folly Beach Residents Report Police Harassment

Mrs. James, these people aren't denying that your son was recognized for things he has done. The concern is over the manner in which he, and some other officers, conduct themselves while doing their jobs. The very first story in this article is an excellent example. Why would Deputy James insist that someone breathe in his face? That was unprofessional move number one. Then, after searching his car for breathalyzer equipment and not finding it (not having it and having a disorganized squad car are unprofessional moves two and three), he then decided that he wasn't required to have one and immediately moved to Miranda? He took a woman in a bathing suit to jail (in North Charleston) on top of that. This guy might have some awards, but he's a lose canon that is on a power trip. By treating all citizens as perps, he demonstrates that he doesn't understand community policing, which is often very successful in shore communities. Aggressive guys like this give the justice-centric officers a bad name.
