It’s difficult to peg Columbia art-punk trio The Unawares with a tidy definition. Checking out some of the tunes from the band’s 2009 mini album Pinkie Green, we detected the off-kilter pop sensibility of the Swell Maps and The Buzzcocks, the rough-edged guitar chord wash of Hüsker Dü, and the sudden stop-and-start and tempo changes of the Minutemen. Singer/guitarist John Watkins boldly belts it out with nervous energy and a sense of earnestness while bassist James Wallace and drummer Rhett Berger rattle away in sync behind him. They pack a lot of musicality, frustration, and commentary into very dense and concise outbursts. Each strange song on Pinkie Green is a winner. Indie-rock quartet The Pharmacy Spirits (based out of Lincoln, Neb.) open the show on Thursday. They specialize in a more atmospheric, Sonic Youth/Pylon-inspired style of stiff-dance post-punk. —T.
