Have you ever seen a Shi’a skinhead? Can you wear a burka and still be a riot grrl? In 2003, Michael Muhammad Knight — who converted to Islam at the age of 15 — self-printed his novel The Taqwacores and handed out copies in parking lots. Back then, Taqwacore was purely an invention of Knight, a term to describe a Muslim hardcore punk scene that didn’t actually exist at the time. Now there are many bands that fall under its umbrella, like The Kominas, Secret Trial Five, and Fedayeen. The Greater Park Circle Film Society will screen the book’s film adaptation, which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, on Saturday night. It follows Yusef, a Pakistani-American student living in Buffalo, N.Y. He moves into an off-campus house with a group of Muslim punks who introduce him to Taqwacore, inspiring Yusef to reconsider his own faith and lifestyle. —Susan Cohen
