As kids, we always wondered how Santa got all those bikes down kids’ chimneys. Maybe the elves made them inside the house? But seeing your first bike underneath the tree is a memory that sticks with you, and it’s one the Spokes Group Charleston wants to give every child. “I remember the first new bike Santa Claus left under my tree. The freedom and independence that comes with a new bicycle can stay with a child for life,” says Austin Thornton, one of the four co-founders of the group. The Bikes, Brews, and BBQ event will use the proceeds to purchase bikes and helmets for kids across the Lowcountry. The event, of course, will have barbecue and beer, with the barbecue coming from Marvin’s Meats in Hollywood and the beer from Palmetto Brewery. “The bikes are delivered to the North Charleston Convention Center by Huffy where we have a professional assembler come in to put the bikes together,” Thornton says. “The bikes are then distributed through the Salvation Army Angel Tree.”
