We’re going straight to hell — or at least C.S. Lewis’ version of it. The theatrical adaptation of Lewis’ novel The Screwtape Letters will take the stage as part of a national tour honoring his legacy. Lewis, who passed away 50 years ago this November, sets the play in the place Lewis hoped he wouldn’t end up. The tale is a satirical work of Christian literature composed of 31 letters from Screwtape, an advisor to Satan who entices human patients toward damnation. In the letters, Screwtape is teaching his fellow demons how to corrupt the world. This morally inverted universe has God as the enemy and the Devil as “our Father below.” The performance features Brent Harris as Screwtape, who has also played Scar in The Lion King, Iago in Othello, Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, and the lead role in Macbeth. The tour is hitting over 50 major stages across the country.
