Muscadine Time: Channeling Bacchus at the Grape Stomping Fest

The scene was downright idyllic at Irvin~House Vineyards on Wadmalaw last Saturday as folks gathered for the annual Grape Stomping Festival. Revelers teetered around gulping cups (and bottles) of the vineyard’s muscadine wine, but kept things pretty much in check and relaxed for this family-friendly affair. Professional picnic-ers were spread out in front of the rockin’ bluegrass band Three Legged Pig, while kids ran through the vines, chomped on grapes, and hula hooped. A couple of soupy tubs of grapes awaited anyone willing to dip their feet in (I had to pass on the fermented foot juice). Note to self: next year bring a chair, a bunch of friends, and hope that they’ll be selling bottles of their Firefly vodka along with the wine. Either that or I’m going to have to acquire a taste for the muscadine. —Erica Jackson
