THE SCENE

Tennis balls and spring bonnets marked the week, which was dominated by sport and family gatherings. As the mercury climbed to record levels, thousands flocked to the Family Circle tennis complex on Daniel Island for the annual tournament that pits the world's leading female players against one another in a spectacular show of athleticism, skill, and style. Lacoste, the official apparel sponsor, polished the tournament's fashionable facade as volunteers, ball crew, and other officials were easily identified by their lovely array of pastel shirts emblazoned with the French fashion house's logo. Dozens of female attendees sported fuzzy bunny ears at the tournament's finale on Sunday, where Italian ice and cold drinks were in high demand. On Saturday morning, scores of festively festooned ladies, gentlemen, children, and dogs strolled along High Battery for the Hat Ladies' fifth annual Easter Promenade. From traditional straw buckets and conservative bowlers to bombastic feather creations, it was a dazzling millinery parade that attracted the applause of early morning joggers and tourists alike.
