The Really Really Free Market

Phone: (843) 864-3387

During a time of year where everything seems to come with a cost, whether you’re buying presents or paying high electric bills for your Christmas lights, it’s nice to find some kind of reprieve — like at the Really Really Free Market. A national trend, the RRFM has been held in Charleston since 2007 and has grown each year since. “Basically, we saw a need for the sharing of goods and services in Charleston and tried to make that a reality,” says co-organizer Allston Smither. “Since the organizers are mostly low-income, we really know how helpful a community giving event can be, especially around the holidays.” You’ll find winter clothing, furniture, electronics, toys, household items, media, and more items; live music from Sarah Bandy and others; workshops; and a hot vegetarian-friendly meal and drinks. And yes, it all stays faithful to the event’s name: none of it will cost you a cent. Grabbing a shirt and some hot chocolate and walking away isn’t as sketchy as it sounds. “Don’t be shy. Part of the idea is the breakdown of the division between different groups of people and coming together in a free and open environment based on mutual aid. My advice would be to come and expect to enjoy yourself,” says Nick Rubin, another organizer. Adds co-organizer Micah Carpenter, “As far as I’m concerned, everyone is in need of a little love — and most people are really happy to have a community space where they can give and receive it freely.” —Susan Cohen
