The Pack A.D.

When: Tue., Oct. 12 2010
Price: $5
In the modern age of digital effects, sampling, and overwrought post-production, the recent resurgence of garage-rock seems almost inevitable. Bands are exchanging their Pro-Tools for four-track recorders, stripping production down to what really matters: the straight sounds of the instruments. Canadian rockers Pack A.D. strip things down even further by going bass-less, letting the guitar handle both the high and low ends. The duo consists of singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer Maya Miller, two females in a predominantly male scene. Gender isn’t too important though, as Black’s vocal presence is rather androgynous most of the time, reminiscent of Yeah Yeah Yeah’s frontwoman Karen O. Miller’s drumming style complements Black’s stripped-down arrangements, her beats relying on restraint more than showmanship. Pack A.D. will bring their foot-stomping garage-rock to the Tin Roof in support of their new full-length We Kill Computers (they really shun Pro-Tools). Audience members will be surprised how much noise these two can make. —Jansen Cumbie
