Cinebarre hosts their first live theatrical performance next week, and they couldn’t have chosen a better play. Gene Glave’s inspirational one-woman show, The Mammalogues, is one of the most beloved productions in the Lowcountry. It has sold out shows during Piccolo Spoleto, and City Paper readers named it the best local play and Gene Glave best local actress in 2008. The show is based on Glave’s fight with breast cancer, which she recounted in her popular blog. “I did it to get the terror of cancer out of my head and heart and into the written word where it was powerless and controllable,” Glave said in an interview with City Paper contributor Nick Smith. “When I was growing up, people didn’t talk about breast cancer — it was a dirty little secret. I wanted to put it out there.” Proceeds from the performance at Cinebarre will benefit the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center and the Light the Night Walk. —Erica Jackson
