In our materialistic society, the holidays often serve as a time for us to reflect and remind ourselves to be thankful. Enter The Little Match Girl. It tells the story of a poor little girl’s struggle to keep warm on a cold winter day. The only way she can stay warm is to light match after match, which she is supposed to be selling to make money for her family. With each match, she sees visions of hope and love. Chamber Music Charleston and the Charleston Dance Institute collaborated on an original ballet production of the Hans Christian Anderson holiday classic. Composer Laura Ball and choreographer Jonathan Tabbert spent nine months creating the ballet. “It’s like our musical child,” says Ball. “It’s a really heartfelt, magical story. Everything is told through the eyes of the little match girl.” From the twirling snowflakes to the dancing flames, the visions of the little match girl will come to life in human form. Plus, the orchestra will share the stage with the dancers.
