Photos: The Holy City’s bearded beauties compete for bragging rights

Beard Fetish

We’re not sure anyone really knew what to expect from the first-ever Beard and Moustache Competition at the Tin Roof Saturday night, save a handful of gnarly, old timer beards — but it was a hit for sure. Holy City Beard and Moustache Society members and their friends enjoyed COAST beer and steaming Lowcountry boil early in the night.

Facial hair ranged from pencil-thin moustaches to mid-chest-level beards to muttonchops and beyond. A handful of women even joined the fun with creative creations like a cork ensemble and a glittery pink concoction. Actual competitions began around 9 p.m., and the three judges debated the lucky winners in each of the categories, including sideburns, goatee, moustache, bearded lady, recession, freestyle, gray beard, and full beard.

In between judging, Flatt City took the stage and kept everyone lively and warm. To say the event was successful would be an understatement. Paul Roof and his Society sent the Lowcountry Women with Wings home with well over a couple thousand dollars to help support research for ovarian cancer, and of course, the Tin Roof was packed.

Upwards of 10 and 11 o’clock, it was hard to even get around the joint, and people were spilling out onto the patio and parking lot. Lucky for the parking lot party, they had a show of their own thanks to a professional photographer (Badjon) who was snapping pictures of the bearded men and women. If you hope to be in the runnings for a full beard prize in 2011, you should probably start growing today.
