The Hold Steady w/ Wintersleep

When: Mon., Sept. 27 2010
Price: $18, $15 (adv.)
I write this with maple syrup practically flowing through my veins: For every wonderful act my home country, Canada, has introduced to the U.S.A. (Arcade Fire), we have one to apologize for (Celine Dion). Let Wintersleep, an indie-rock outfit from Halifax, Nova Scotia, be a check mark in the winners column, perhaps offsetting Justin Bieber or Drake. The quintet’s 2007 album Welcome to the Night Sky calls to mind the very best elements of Counting Crows’ debut, minus the whine — good, catchy riffs and lyrics that span the emotional spectrum of silly to contemplative, spawning the inescapable hit, “Weighty Ghost.” Wintersleep’s latest release, New Inheritors, revels in more studio tricks, with richly layered vocals and a wider variety of influences. The album’s titular track boasts background flourishes from a brass section, while “Black Camera” seems to borrow a motorcycle’s sputtering engine for effect. “Experience the Jewel” begins dramatically with a string section and builds to a stomp-pop, chamber-rock explosion chastising self pity. From Canada, with love. The band is on the road with the Hold Steady this season. —Andrea Warner
