It seems like Charleston is showing a record number of Nutcracker performances this year, but Jennifer Weber’s Hip Hop Nutcracker just might be the most modern take on the classic Russian ballet, which tells the story of a family’s Christmas Eve celebration. Directed and choreographed by Weber, Hip Hop Nutcracker is set to Tchaikovsky’s original score, but features additions like hip-hop interludes by DJ Boo and violinist Filip Pogády, with a dozen dancers telling the tale. This version of the story is set in 1980s Brooklyn and takes Maria-Clare and her prince, Myron, back in time to when Maria-Clare’s first met at a nightclub. The hip-hop great Kurtis Blow will emcee the production.
