Comedy

Calling The Hangover Part II “part two” is a little dishonest, but I guess The Hangover All Over Again would have been a tough sell. But that’s all this is. It’s the same movie as The Hangover, only in a more expensive location, with a little added raunch, and some simian value thrown in. Considering that it’s raked in over $118 million from Thursday through Sunday, it’s both hard to argue against the approach and a little distressing as a barometer of what audiences apparently want to see. Sure, it’s been moved to Thailand, but we have another wedding — this time it’s Stu (Ed Helms) who’s getting married — and another debauch courtesy of Alan (Zach Galifianakis), who once again drugs everybody. This, of course, means that they’re soon waking up in a sleazy Bangkok hotel with a cigarette-smoking capuchin monkey and the bride-to-be’s younger brother Teddy (Mason Lee) missing, except for his severed finger, which is in the ice bucket. Oh, yeah, Stu’s now been tattooed like Mike Tyson. It follows that they have to piece together what happened and find Teddy. If you liked the first one, you might well like this one; the audience I saw it with certainly did. The best I can say is that I didn’t mind sitting through it, except when Ken Jeong was on screen and in need of being shot with a tranquilizer gun. It helps that Bradley Cooper, Helms, and especially Galifianakis are inherently likable, despite their various assaults on good taste or even reasonable prudence. The monkey probably helps even more.
