Everyone’s good at something, but it can be difficult to find the right place and time to showcase your ability to apply your lipstick with your cleavage. South of Broadway Theatre Company will display some of Charleston’s most unusually gifted individuals for their fall fundraiser inspired by the popular ’70s variety program The Gong Show. The panel of judges include local celebrities Chef Brett McKee and Jocelyn Steele from Live 5 News. According to Linda Eisen, of South of Broadway, the submissions range from traditional acts like an impressionist and a stand-up comedian to more quirky talents like a Beatnik-style poetry reading, a ’70s-style Lounge Lizard act, and singing dogs. And just like in the original show, if the judges find an act to be unbearable, the sound of the gong will signal that the performer must make a graceful but immediate exit. “The ideal act will be both different and weird but also entertaining and show talent,” Eisen says. “It’s a venue for people to be able to highlight certain abilities that they couldn’t elsewhere.” The prize basket for the routine with the highest score includes a Sunset Harbor Cruise and a $125 gift certificate to High Cotton. VIP tables for two can be purchased for $75 with a bottle of champagne, and a “suggested donation” cash bar with concessions will also be available.
