We’ve all experienced a performance’s power to transport. Whether a particularly beautiful concert, a rollicking play, or even a trashy TV show, there’s a chance you’ll walk away with a changed heart and the feeling that you just skipped the last few hours of your life. That’s the idea behind The Drowsy Chaperone, the latest offering in the Best of Broadway Series at the North Charleston PAC. The musical comedy received more Tony Awards than any other musical in the 2006 season. It’s the story of a modern-day theater addict known as “Man in Chair.” He escapes his day-to-day doldrums by listening to a record of the 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone. As he’s transported, the musical jumps to life on stage, bringing a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married. Other characters include her saboteur producer, her chaperone, the groom, a Latin lover, and a pair of gangsters/pastry chefs. —Erica Jackson
