J.B. Medlin’s life isn’t easy, but he’s proud of his work. At least five mornings a week, he wakes up before dawn to check his 100 crab pots in the South Edisto River. By 2:30 in the afternoon, he’s loaded his daily catch in his pickup and set up at the busy Johns Island intersection with baskets full of blue crabs. You can find him there all year except March and April. J.B. insists that you call him the Crabman, and he’s not kidding when he boasts that he’s got the best prices in town. Twenty bucks gets you three dozen blue crabs — worth the drive for the next time you’re hosting a backyard cookout.
