Holidays are all about traditions — from watching It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve to spinning a dreidel for some chocolate gelt. But comedian Andy Livengood has a different one: The Christmas Will Be Televised. “The show has become a bit of a tradition for me. My holiday plans every year include buying gifts, decorating, watching Christmas specials — of course — and putting this show back up,” Livengood says. “I think it would feel weird if I didn’t do it. It would almost not feel like Christmas. I look forward to it annually.” The show, now in its fifth year, was co-written by Theatre 99 co-founder Greg Tavares. In a nutshell, the comedy special has Livengood taking you on a tour of holiday pop culture. Think The Grinch done as a rap song, a speedy telling of A Christmas Story, and a mash-up of A Christmas Carol and Star Wars. “The show is basically the same. The overall structure of the show doesn’t really change. Although, I can’t seem to turn off my improv training,” Livengood explains. “Every year I improvise new lines and jokes. These new lines become part of the script the next year. I already have two new lines for this show just from rehearsals.”
