Fun run in the sun

Saturday marks the 40th annual Cooper River Bridge Run (no foolin'). It's the race that more than 35,000 runners from all over the world look forward to all year — an easy breezy 6.2 miles over the river and through downtown Charleston to after-parties galore.

Worried about the first Saturday in April not exactly being a day for little ones (unless your household is training a fleet of junior Olympians)? Fear not. On the eve of the run, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the largest free family festival in Charleston will be held at Hampton Park.

The Kids Run and Wonderfest has it all: live music, toy giveaways, a doggie fashion show, and a magic act. Wonder Works will be giving free toys to every child in attendance while supplies last and they will also have a toy village featuring toys from the nation's top companies including the Charleston-made sensation Swurfer.

There will be musical performances by Southbound 17 and the Lauren Hall Band, a magic show by Caleb Alexander, and, for the first year there will be a Doggie Fashion show for the Lowcountry's trend-setting pooches.

After the festivities, those who have registered (you can also register day-of) for the Kids Run will start the race at 5 p.m. Registration is $8 in advance and $10 day-of and each kid receives an official T-shirt, race number, and medal.
