The 6th Annual Charleston Comedy Festival

It's ha-ha time

Jee-zuus, the economy sucks.

You need a laugh more than ever.

Good thing we have the sixth annual Charleston Comedy Festival.

Maybe we can lighten your heart enough to get you through 2009, which by most accounts, is expected to be even worse than 2008.

If you can believe that.

A co-production of Theatre 99 and City Paper, the Charleston Comedy Festival once again has rounded up a passel of improv, sketch, and stand-up comedians for four nights of easy fun.

It all starts on Wednesday with lots of homegrown talent — Neckprov, 3 Play, Big Dicktionary, Full Love Throttle, and The Banana Monologues.

And again this year, audiences will end up picking Charleston's funniest person in a stand-up competition at the Music Farm.

The main attraction is the return of God's Pottery, two Christian camp counselor-types who sing songs of hope for teenagers struggling to understand what's happening to their tan, nubile, and perfectly formed young bodies.

On Friday and Saturday, gear up for the return of I Eat Pandas, the Buffoons, the Pushers, and Hot Sauce. They loved rocking audiences last year so much they've come back for another round of comedy in the Holy City. It's all good, clean comedy, and great for the whole family, except when it's not anywhere near good or clean — or great for the whole family.

Other highlights through the weekend are Cook County Social Club, two Improv Marathons, two Stand-Up Showdowns, and a painfully funny New York outfit called FUCT.

And remember, it can't be long 'til the economy hits bottom.

Then we'll really have something to laugh about.
