Terrace Theater announces new film festival

A tale of two fests

Although the Terrace Theater was home to several Charleston International Film Festival events last year, Terrace owner Mike Furlinger plans to launch an entirely new movie showcase in 2010 — the Charleston Film Festival. Set for March 11-14, the Charleston Film Festival is unaffiliated with CIFF, and the focus will be on local and regional films, with a few other national films in there. Films will be shown at both the Terrace Theater on James Island and the Terrace Hippodrome downtown. Furlinger points out that a number of films have been produced by Trident Tech students and local filmmakers. The Terrace also plans to award scholarships to promising filmmakers. On August 15, Furlinger will debut the website for the new fest, charlestonfilmfestival.com.

As for the Charleston International Film Festival, it’s still on for April 1-4, 2010. According to a CIFF staffer, the fest will be moving to “a more centrally located classic theater in a more vibrant, easy-to-get-to location” and will still showcase “the very best of emerging filmmakers and writers from the Lowcountry, U.S., and around the world.” To learn more about CIFF, visit charlestoniff.com.
