Re: “The joy's still there for Three Dog Night

Here is the story I was told "off the record" years ago! I have been in radio over 3 decades & if you get the right person, in the right studio, at the right time, in the right mood, and the interview clicks it is amazing what some honest folks will tell you. There's no sense in saying who said this and I am paraphrasing because it was too many years and stations ago. Chuck Negron's struggle with drugs is no secret and he told the hard to read details in his autobiography. There have been sporadic shows over the years with all three members but Danny Hutton is the guy that is locking Chuck out. If you followed the band and their sound thru the years it is no big secret that Cory easily had, and has, the best voice. Chuck was a close second in voice but easily the most popular & favorite among fans. It is 100% Danny Hutton refusing to allow Chuck to work with them again, the reason? Hutton essentially becomes a back-up singer again because Cory & Chuck sang the majority of the hits & without Cory Danny gets to sing more and be out front which is what he REALLY wants/needs! It has nothing to do with money or Chuck's drug issues from back in the day as he has been drug free for more then 20 years now! It has ONLY to do with Danny sick of being in the background!
During the end of their run they toured with The Beach Boys and the tour with ALL Three of the Dogs did very well with many sold-out shows. In the early 80's Negron said he called Hutton's house to talk to him about all 3 reuniting and going on the road with The Beach Boys again for their "Final Tour". When he called Hutton's house with the idea Danny's wife answered & Hutton refused to talk to him so Negron had to lay the idea out to Hutton's wife & Danny never called Negron back about the idea. Years later Chuck heard that Cory never heard about the idea but it didn't surprise Negron because apparently Hutton & Wells simply do not like each other & even though they do about 75 shows a year together Hutton & Wells STILL despise one another! Negron said, "They never got along. They’re unkind to one another, I guess. Cory is terribly disappointed in Danny and how he does business. Danny just dislikes Cory. He really dislikes him. So it’s just one of those things. And they’re out there on stage. They don’t talk to one another. They don’t look at one another. I can’t believe they’re working because I would think the word would be out that it’s just not a very friendly show They hate each other. They don’t talk. They don’t ride in the same car. They don’t fly on the same flight. In the hotels, if there is only one elevator, one guy stays on the first floor. They do everything they can not to see one another because they get into fights. Can you imagine two old men hitting each other? It’s comical! Now you know who to blame & it is NOT Cory Wells or Chuck Negron!
