Re: “Nikki Haley proposes cutting funding to S.C. arts organizations

As a public school teacher, I can personally vouch for what arts education brings to our students. There has been study after study after study to show that participation in the arts raises SAT scores, standardized test scores, grades, and even keeps kids out of trouble. So why, when SC is near the bottom for standardized test scores that we seem to hold so dear, would we cut a program that raises them? I know it's easy to look at the arts and say they are not important. Kids need to read, write, and do math- and I totally agree, but when we cut the arts, we are taking away our children's ability to think critically, create, imagine, and express some individuality. I am a special education teacher in the midlands, and believe me, I know the importance of the 3 Rs, but we can not continue to allow our schools to be cut down the bare minimum. Is that really the kind of education we want for our children?
