Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival

When: Sat., June 5 2010
Phone: (843) 856-9732
Over and under, in and out, the rabbit goes through the rabbit hole. Before entering a section of the Old Market, you are bound to see someone weaving strips of sweetgrass. These repetitive and seemingly simple tasks create intricate (and top-selling) baskets, jewelry, and figurines that tourists want to get their hands on. The basket weaving technique has been passed down from generation to generation, starting with African slaves. The Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival returns to Mt. Pleasant for its sixth year. Previously stationed at Laing Middle School, the festival moves to its new home at Mt. Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park. It features an assortment of mini-events and activities with artisans, crafters, quilters, gospel singers, Gullah storytellers, the ADANDE African Drum and Dance Group, and much more. Visitors will learn about the history of the basket makers, watch demonstrations, and see some of the largest displays of sweetgrass-made items. Gullah cuisine, barbecue, and drinks will be available for purchase. Plus, some lucky visitors will get a chance to win a basket of their own in a raffle event. —Christina Janke
