Re: “Leonard Pitts on Keeping Faith and Losing Religion

(Standing up.) Hello, my name is Sundey. And I am a Christian. A Southern Methodist actually, in the home state of George W. Bush where I think people imagine we have a giant picture of him next to the cross.

What's worse, I belong to a megachurch. But I have not had the experience that is being described here.

I have no real political affiliations. I vote when compelled by my heart. My church has never, not once, told me how to vote or tried to sway me politically. I am sad that people like Pat Robertson are giving churches this stigma.
In my church when we come together it is to worship. We focus on gratitude, on love of others and betterment of the ourselves and the service of others. I think most of the people in my church are too busy trying to walk their own path with God to worry about what other people are doing. Unfortunately, these people live quiet, private existences and they get trampled by people who hold up religion as a tarp to cover their underlying fears and hate.

Could it be that ALL churches are terrible? Or could it be that some are, and some are great-quietly serving the Lord and others with joy? That's not to say that any church, or any person, is perfect. But I do want to say that many of us are just striving to be more Christ-like, to love everyone, to forgive those who have hurt us, to serve those who need help and to transcend things like petty, judgmental politics. It's sad to me when compassionate, thinking people leave the church because they are the antidote to hypocrisy and hatred.

I hope Ms. Rice will reconsider and find a place in a church that allows her to walk her own path, that doesn't judge or direct her in the ways of this world, but instead focuses on the glories and blessings of the Lord and his kingdom in heaven.
