It is articles such as this that simply serve to continue to drive a wedge between black and white in this state. Yes, this is a moment in history. No, this is not the state of affairs in SC now. It would have been much more responsible to have concluded the article with opinion or quotes that showed the difference in the region in 2007. Unfortunately, the writer seems to have been more interested in a titillating article to stir up readers, than in a responsible treatment of an historical event. If we constantly refer to ourselves as African-Americans, or other hyphenated titles, or as white or black, we are not reaching for the "color blind society" that most of us desire. Citizens need to think of themselves simply as Americans, or as South Carolinians, who happen to be either black, white, or Latino. Then we can begin to bury these wedges, and become a united community, where events like the one written about, do not happen.
