Atmospheric, spaced-out, and sophisticatedly syncopated, the Santa Cruz-based progressive/electronic band STS9 (a.k.a. Sound Tribe Sector 9) has been on a unique music trip for years. The collective returns to Charleston this week during their massive coast-to-coast tour in support of a new studio album titled Ad Explorata (1320 Records) — their tenth official album release since forming in Athens, Ga., in the late ’90s (they quickly relocated to California in the early 2000s). Guitarist Hunter Brown, percussionist Jeffree Lerner, bassist David Murphy, pianist/synth man David Phipps, and drummer Zach Velmer describe the new studio collection as “inspired by the idea that there is always more to be discovered; manifested by the belief that you can always push toward the unknown and unexplored.” —T. Ballard Lesemann
