Steve Kimock Crazy Engine

When: Fri., Nov. 13 2009
Price: $20, $18 (adv.)

Acclaimed jazz/rock guitarist Steve Kimock’s latest musical project, the Bay Area-based Crazy Engine, is a funky and exploration-minded powerhouse combo featuring his son, John Morgan Kimock, on drums; singer-songwriter and cello player Trevor Exterand; and extra-special guest keyboardist Melvin Seals (of the Jerry Garcia Band) on the big Hammond B3. A fearless improvisor who first stood out in the San Fran band scene with the group Zero, Kimock says he his and skillful bandmates “push the boundaries of rock ‘n’ roll, rhythm and blues, gospel, and soul.” Kimock’s a giant in the jam scene. He’s performed with an impressive list of musicians, including John Cipollina (of Quicksilver Messenger Service), Peter Frampton, Little Feat, Jerry Garcia, and members of the Grateful Dead, Phish, The Allman Brothers, The Neville Brothers, and many others. Relix Magazine refers to the man as the “Guitar Monk” for his “commitment to guitar, and his ability to make it speak with its own original voice.” In addition to his work with the JGB, Seals has recorded and jammed through the years with Elvin Bishop, Charlie Daniels, Chuck Berry, and others. His most recent solo disc is titled Melvin Seals’ Melting Pot. Crazy Engine’s fall performances will be recorded and available for purchase, and a live “fan release” is already in the works. —T.
